Optimal Elasticity of Biological Networks

چکیده

Reinforced elastic sheets surround us in daily life, from concrete shell buildings to biological structures such as the arthropod exoskeleton or venation network of dicotyledonous plant leaves. Natural are often highly optimized through evolution and natural selection, leading biologically practically relevant problem understanding applying principles their design. Inspired by hierarchically organized scaffolding networks found leaves, here we model bending beams that capture discrete nonuniform nature materials. Using principle maximal rigidity under resource constraints, show optimal beam reproduce structural features real leaf venation. Thus, addition its ability efficiently transport water nutrients, also optimizes using same hierarchical reticulated topology. We study phase space mechanical networks, providing guidelines for construction structures. implement these design rules fabricating efficient, inspired metamaterials.

Elasticity Considerations for Optimal Pricing of Networks

Static optimization of networks by pricing has attracted significant attention over the last decade. These studies assumed concave utility functions for users and derived optimal pricing strategies for the network provider. In this paper, we consider effect of user’s elasticity to price and bandwidth on optimality of pricing. We first derive optimal pricing strategy for the case of logarithmic ...

Finding optimal gene networks using biological constraints.

The accurate estimation of gene networks from gene expression measurements is a major challenge in the field of Bioinformatics. Since the problem of estimating gene networks is NP-hard and exhibits a search space of super-exponential size, researchers are using heuristic algorithms for this task. However, little can be said about the accuracy of heuristic estimations. In order to overcome this ...

Elasticity of entangled networks

The classical theory of rubber elasticity t contains an unrealistic assumption. It assumes that the polymer chains move through each other as 'phantoms' held only by crosslinks, and that the whole system is prevented from collapsing by the assumption of repulsive forces which generate a bulk modulus but are otherwise ignored. The neglect of repulsive effects in calculating the shear elasticity ...

Elasticity of Poissonian fiber networks

An effective-medium model is introduced for the elasticity of two-dimensional random fiber networks. These networks are commonly used as basic models of heterogeneous fibrous structures such as paper. Using the exact Poissonian statistics to describe the microscopic geometry of the network, the tensile modulus can be expressed by a single-parameter function. This parameter depends on the networ...
